Stress. It’s a public health concern that costs millions of dollars in health and mental-health related problems, and it’s something that affects everyone. Are your kids included in this group? - Behavior changes. Stressed children have a hard time expressing their feelings with words, and may express them through misbehavior or unusual behavior. If your child has started acting irritable, withdrawing, crying more than usual, or acting clingy, he or she may be stressed.
- Unexplained physical symptoms. When we don’t talk about our feelings, our bodies show them. Children who have frequent stomachaches, headaches, or muscle pains without a medical explanation may be stressed.
- School failure. When your A-B student starts getting failing grades, you may want to find out about her stress levels. Stress is very distracting, and can keep grades low.
- Peer problems. Is your child suddenly “in a fight” with everyone he knows? The problem may not be the friends—it may be something stressful.
- Stressful things happened. This sounds silly, but remember that the same things that stress adults out stress kids out, too! A move, a change in family arrangements, or anything else stressful can affect kids.

- Talk about it. Words are powerful tools. They can contribute to stress, and they can help to manage it! Help your young child talk about stress by modeling your own reactions, supporting the development of “feelings” words, and asking them if they are worried, sad, or upset about anything. For teens, ask about specific things to show them you care, and don’t be surprised if they blow you off. After all, they can handle anything—but your support will not go unnoticed.
- Take time outs. Kids are very, very busy, and even when this includes fun things, it can be stressful. Help them relax by scheduling a day off.
